5 tips for easy Internet access in Mexico City

You’ve arrived in Mexico City and didn’t anticipate your need for an internet connection? You were told that CDMX had free wifi everywhere, and since most of your Mexican road trip will take place in the city, you weren’t suspicious.

The problem? Ordering an Uber or using Google Map is a real headache! The capital does indeed provide many free hotspots, BUT the signal is weak and the connection absolutely unreliable. This problem is literally ruining your stay, and you need some advice on how to get online quickly and easily in Mexico City.

How do I get easy Internet access in Mexico City?

  1. Instead, use wifis in hotels or restaurants and cafés in tourist areas. Internet connections there are of better quality. Also, install a VPN on your phone (more on this below).
  2. Buy a cheap prepaid SIM card locally.
  3. Buy an eSIM to avoid running to the stores.
  4. Use data roaming.
  5. Buy an international SIM card with express delivery option.

Tip 1: Use CDMX's free public WiFi

Mexico City is supposed to have free WiFi throughout its territory. The problem? Even if it does exist, there are big disparities in the Mexican capital. You’ll find the best connections in tourist areas like Polanco, Roma, Condesa and Centro Historico. Not least in cafés, restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions.

To make the most of Mexico’s public Wifi, we suggest you follow these tips.

Always use a VPN

Free connections can be a security hole, so we recommend using a VPN to encrypt your data and prevent hacking.

Why use a VPN?

  • To protect your personal data
  • To access certain services blocked by your location
  • To improve connection speeds on certain public networks

How do I install a VPN?

Installing a VPN is quick and requires no special technical skills. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Choose a VPN provider: opt for a reliable service like NordVPN, ExpressVPN or Surfshark.
  2. Download the application
  3. Create an account
  4. Install and configure the VPN: launch the application, log in with your credentials and select a server (prefer a server located in Mexico or a neighboring country for best performance).
  5. Activate the VPN: once connected, your Internet traffic will be secure. You’ll be able to surf public networks without fear.

Remember to activate your VPN before connecting to a public wifi network. Some services can also automate this connection, so you don’t have to think about it every time.

Optimizing the use of your GPS

In addition, remember to download your Google Maps before you go out. The application allows you to save routes offline, so you don’t get lost without a connection. You can also use another GPS application that doesn’t use the Internet. The only drawback is that you won’t have real-time traffic information (and therefore the duration of your route).

Tip 2: Buy a sim card in the low-cost capital

Buying a prepaid SIM card is an excellent option for travelers who want free Internet access. You’ll be able to enjoy a stable connection without relying on public networks. Several options are available, depending on your budget and needs.

Where can I buy a SIM card?

SIM cards are available in :

  • Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX)
  • Convenience stores such as OXXO, 7 -Eleven, Walmart
  • Cell phone stores

Which operators to choose?

The main operators are Telcel, AT&T México and Movistar.

  • Telcel: better network coverage and unlimited data options on WhatsApp
  • AT&T México: good value for money for short stays
  • Movistar: Cheaper option, but coverage can be inconsistent

Tip 3: Buy an eSIM online

If your smartphone is compatible (check here), eSIM is a practical alternative. It lets you access the Internet without having to buy a physical card or go to a store. Everything is done online, and activation is immediate.

The main advantage of eSIM is its rapid installation. Once purchased, it is sent by e-mail and activated via a simple QR code. You’ll need a wifi connection to finalize the configuration, which can be done from your hotel or the airport.

Benefits of eSIM

  • Immediate activation. There’s no need to go anywhere to take advantage of this solution. Everything is done automatically by e-mail (so you’ll still need an Internet connection with your hotel or airport Wifi, for example).
  • No need to change your physical card
  • Different packages available, depending on length of stay and data requirements

Where can I buy an eSIM for Mexico?

  • SIM USA : Unlimited data packages
  • Airalo: Rates tailored to length of stay
  • Nomad: a good alternative for those who want a flexible connection

Tip 4: Use your operator's data roaming service

Data roaming allows you to use your cell phone package abroad. It’s a simple option, but often costly if not included in your subscription. Before you leave, check your operator’s terms and conditions.

Some packages include an international data envelope. In this case, activating roaming may be enough to get Internet at CDMX. Beware, however, of overruns, which can result in high charges.

If your package doesn’t offer a free option, you can subscribe to a temporary offer. Some operators allow you to buy an Internet pass for a few days or weeks. Compare prices before choosing this solution.

Tip 5: Buy an international SIM card with express delivery

If you want to be connected as soon as you arrive, the easiest way is to buy an international SIM card. It can be delivered to your home before you leave, and activated immediately on arrival.

But if you’ve completely forgotten to think about your connection before you leave, we advise you to choose an international operator with express delivery. Especially if you’re staying for more than a week, and plan to travel to other North American countries afterwards. You’ll find packages like ours with delivery in 2 to 4 days.

The advantages of SIM cards with express delivery :

  • Delivered anywhere in the world before or after your trip
  • Options with unlimited or limited data, with or without calls and SMS depending on your needs.
  • Fast worldwide delivery between 1 and 4 working days depending on your location.

With these five solutions, you can enjoy stress-free Internet access in Mexico City. It’s up to you to choose the one that best suits your budget and needs!
